  • Comics in Clay

    Lillstreet Art Center

    Chicago, IL

Join a cohort of like-minded makers translating their love of comics, manga, zines, graphic novels, and more into the endless possibilities of clay. Our patient instructors will lead the class in an introductory project of one tile-based story to introduce pertinent techniques. Demonstrations will include evenly drying pieces to avoid warping, best practices for carving greenware, affixing and grouting tile, and applying a myriad of ceramic and cold processes for image creation. From there, students will take inspiration from their favorite stories to craft a unique sculpture, vessel, installation, or tile set with instructor support.

  • Ceramic Sculpture: Evocative Busts

    Lillstreet Art Center

    Chicago, IL

Explore the world of figurative sculpture from the shoulders up! This course will focus exclusively on crafting ceramic busts, with lessons each week elucidating a variety of methods to create the face, cranium, neck, shoulders, and hair. Techniques demonstrated will include pinching, coiling, slabs, and solid sculpting. In addition to demonstrations, short slideshows exploring historical and contemporary examples of busts will serve as a jumping off point for further cohort discussion.
